What is Textured Skin?

Skin texture can occur in the form of bumps, pits, flakes, enlarged pores and roughness. These areas of uneven skin texture are often easy to feel and can be a little harder to see – until you apply makeup, that is.

What Causes Textured Skin?

There are countless potential causes of skin texture, from the natural signs of ageing to sun damage. Here are a few of the most common culprits behind textured skin:

  • Build-up of Dead Skin Cells – As we age, skin turnover (where the skin naturally sheds dead skin cells) begins to slow down, leading to a build-up of dead skin cells on the skin’s surface. This can result in an uneven skin texture and a dull appearance.
  • Acne Scarring – This is one of the main reasons you shouldn’t pick your spots! Acne scarring is one of the most common causes of textured skin, leaving bumps where your old blemishes have healed.
  • Pockmarks – Ever noticed those small, crater-like indentations in your skin? These are ‘pockmarks’ caused by a sudden loss of collagen as a result of inflammation. Again, acne scars can be the culprit here (these are often called pitted acne scars).
  • Eczema and Dry Skin – With eczema and dry skin often comes flakes and sometimes scaliness, resulting in a very uneven skin texture.
  • Sun Damage – And finally, the cause of many skin concerns – UV rays from the sun. UV is responsible for not only killing off skin cells prematurely but can impact skin’s collagen production, creating uneven texture.

How to Get Rid of Textured Skin

First things first: skin texture is NORMAL!

Social media filters may be able to create the illusion of ‘perfect skin’, but in reality, everyone’s skin has some texture! For one, our pores are extremely important for our overall skin function – we need them to keep our skin moisturized!

That said, there are several tips and tricks you can follow to discover how to improve skin texture.

Tip 1 – Exfoliate with Glycolic Acid

Exfoliation is an effective method to help rid the skin of dead skin cells, dirt and debris. Not only can this reveal a brighter, healthy-looking complexion, but it helps tackle skin texture, promoting smoother skin.

Glycolic Acid is our go-to skincare ingredient when it comes to exfoliating. Acting gently to slough away those dead skin cells, Glycolic Acid can slip seamlessly into your routine through a variety of products. From cleansers to moisturizers, just make sure you top up with SPF, as GA can increase skin’s sensitivity to the sun.

Tip 2 – Get a Deeper Exfoliation with a Skin Peel

If textured skin is really getting you down, a more intense exfoliation treatment could help boost the efforts of your other skincare steps.

The Skincare Multi Acid Peeling Solution is the perfect weekly treatment for evening out skin texture, working to exfoliate the top layer of skin and work deeper into the pores.

The AHA mix is a blend of Lactic Acid, Glycolic Acid, and Fruit Acids from Bilberry, Blueberry, Super Maple, Orange, and Lemon. It also contains Salicylic Acid, the BHA that tackles blemishes and helps prevent breakouts, alleviating further chances of uneven skin texture.

Expert Tip: Use this treatment no more than twice a week. Over-exfoliation can strip the skin of its essential oils, which could lead to skin drying out, causing skin texture to get worse.

Tip 3 – Apply SPF Everyday

As we said, sun damage can be responsible for many skin concerns, from premature signs of aging to hyperpigmentation.

When it comes to textured skin, UV rays can be one of the main causes. Too much time in the sun can lead to a breakdown of collagen, creating early onset wrinkles, fine lines and pockmarks.

This is why SPF should be worn every day (even on cloudy days!).

Tip 4 – Add Oil-Based Products to Your Routine

Now, this may seem counterintuitive, but adding oils into your skincare routine can actually help to target textured skin.

When you cleanse and exfoliate, it can strip the face of its natural oils, causing skin to overcompensate and produce more. This can lead to clogged pores, blackheads and uneven skin texture.

Oil based products can be implemented into your skincare routine to help regulate skin’s sebum production.

We love the Revolution Skincare Gold Elixir, enriched with Rosehip Seed Oil. It promotes soft, supple skin, helping to not only smooth away dry skin and rebalance oils, but provide an unbeatable radiance with the flecks of gold!

Tip 5 – Try Vitamin C Skincare

As a powerful antioxidant used in skincare to help repair and defend the skin from environmental damage, Vitamin C also works to restore suppleness and reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and acne scars.

We have a variety of Vitamin C skincare products to add into your routine. You can also check out our cosmetic scientist’s guide to Vitamin C to find out more.

Tip 6 – Choose a Smoothing Primer

One of the most annoying things about textured skin is the effect it has on makeup application.

One way to help skin appear smoother is to start your makeup routine with a primer to prep your base.

The Makeup Revolution Conceal & Fix Pore Perfecting Primer tackles the appearance of enlarged pores and uneven skin texture. It smooths onto the skin like velvet, creating the perfect canvas for flawless foundation!
